John Lorenz is the chief financial officer for DeVry University, responsible for the overall finance function, including accounting, financial planning and analysis, tax, treasury, payroll, and other fiscal activities. A key member of the senior leadership team, Lorenz plays a critical role in developing and implementing business and organizational strategy to improve and maintain the financial health and operating efficiency of the university.
Prior to joining DeVry, Lorenz spent more than 18 years at Sears Holding Corporation (SHC), where he held various roles in different divisions of the organization, including Sears Financial Services, Sears Retail and Sears Corporate Offices. Previously, he served as the CFO and vice president for SHC’s Shop Your Way Financial Services division, where he provided finance, analytic, accounting, audit and treasury support for several service lines. He was responsible for financial management of one of the largest co-brand retail credit portfolios in the U.S. and managed over $10B in electronic payment volume and related contracts.
Earlier in his career, Lorenz worked at Ameritech Corporation in a variety of financial planning and analysis positions. He began his career at KPMG and attained the audit manager level with a specialization in the commercial, manufacturing and banking industries.
Lorenz earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Illinois Institute of Technology and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He is also a certified public accountant.
