The Benefits of a Master's Degree

A master’s degree can provide many benefits, depending on your individual situation. These may include:

  • Developing knowledge: A master’s degree can help you grow your knowledge in a particular area of focus, gain hands-on experience and boost your leadership skills.

  • Career advancement: In some cases, a master’s may open up previously unavailable career pathways. Earning your degree could help make you more qualified for a promotion or prepare you to pursue a higher-level position at a new company.

  • Higher earning potential: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics4, those with a master’s degree typically have higher median weekly earnings and a lower unemployment rate than those with a bachelor’s degree or less.

  • Networking opportunities: Earning your master’s degree can help you network with other professionals in your industry, giving you an opportunity to build your credibility and your professional reputation.

FAQs: Master’s Degree

What is a master’s degree?

A master’s degree is a type of graduate degree that can be earned after a bachelor’s degree. It represents a higher level of knowledge in a particular area of study. Those who hold a master’s typically have strong skills and techniques in their chosen area, as well as a variety of transferable skills gained through their research and learning.

You may consider pursuing a master’s degree for many reasons, such as to improve your chances of qualifying for a promotion, change fields or to move into a different specialty or simply learn more about your preferred subject area.

How long does it take to earn a master’s degree?

Many master’s degree programs take approximately 2 years to complete, but you can potentially earn your degree in less time with the following:

  • Transfer credits: If you’ve earned qualifying transfer credits from another institution, you may be able to apply them toward your Keller master’s degree.

  • Course waivers3: Depending on the program, you may be eligible for course waivers if you have taken similar courses at the appropriate level. For example, if you have an undergraduate degree in business, you may qualify to earn an MBA in just 10 courses.3

  • Work experience: If you have been through a workforce or military training program, we can evaluate your experience for possible qualifying transfer credit. You may also qualify for course substitutions based on an evaluation of your relevant academic or professional experience.

How much does a master’s degree program cost?

The cost of your hybrid1 or online master's degree program will vary based on the length of the program you choose and other factors such as whether or not you can apply any qualifying transfer credits or scholarships.5 In short, tuition is charged per credit hour, along with any relevant fees. To learn more about the cost, visit our Tuition page.

It’s also important to note that your tuition and fees include more than just your classes. As a student at DeVry, you get access to the following:

  • Convenient mobile app
  • Virtual library
  • 24/7 on-demand tutoring
  • One-on-one student support
  • Academic and financial aid advising
  • Career services with resume and job search support

We can also help determine if you qualify for a variety of financial aid options designed to make paying for your degree more manageable. Depending on your situation, you may qualify for:

  • Scholarships and grants5
  • State-funded programs
  • Federal or private student loans
  • Active-duty military rate
  • Corporate partnership pricing (depending on your employer)

Is an online master’s degree credible?

When earned from an accredited university like DeVry, an online master’s degree is as credible as one gained in person. DeVry is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), www.hlcommission.org, a national agency recognized by both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. Our Keller Graduate School of Management is included in this accreditation.

How is a master’s degree different from a bachelor’s?

A master’s is a type of graduate degree, whereas a bachelor’s is a type of undergraduate degree. In order to enroll in a master’s program, you must have already earned your bachelor’s degree.

Another primary difference is that a bachelor’s degree is designed to teach you core skills in a particular area of study, while a master’s degree dives deeper into a subject area while also focusing on developing business and leadership skills.

Is a master's degree worth it anymore?

We think so! The better question to ask, however, would be, “Is a master’s degree worth it for me?”

Earning a master’s degree is something that you should consider based on your own personal and career goals. The good news is that a master’s may deliver a strong return-on-investment, depending on your long-term career goals and the occupation you choose.

According to May 2023 career outlook data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), those who’ve attained a master’s degree earn  more per week, on average, and experience a lower unemployment rate, than those with only a bachelor’s degree.3

It’s also important to keep in mind that earning a master’s degree may help you qualify for positions where a graduate degree is a requirement for hiring or advancement to higher-level positions.
