Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

Interview & Age Requirements

To gain admission to DeVry University, you must first interview with an Admissions Advisor (Admissions Representative in Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Nebraska) and complete an application for admission. All other general and specific admission requirements must be met, including those regarding age, prior education and evaluation of proficiency in the basic and prerequisite skills needed for college-level work.

Whether you choose to study online or on campus, you must be at least 17 years old on the first day of classes.

Prior Educational Performance

Your prior education history must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Have earned a qualifying Associate Degree or higher from a DeVry-recognized post-secondary institution

  • Have earned a high school diploma or the equivalent, as well as completed an appropriate amount of qualifying college-level work at DeVry-recognized post-secondary institutions, with grades of at least C (70%) or a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 (on a 4.0 scale)

  • Have achieved an Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score of at least 60 on their Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) for admission to the military as documented on an original score report.2

Prior Education Requirement

Each applicant must have earned one of the following educational credentials from a DeVry-recognized organization1:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • General Educational Development (GED®) certificate

  • Post-secondary degree

  • Professional degree

You must provide official documentation during enrollment, unless an extension is granted.

College-Level Skills Evaluation

Prior educational performance is considered, in conjunction with demonstrated proficiency in college-level skills, to determine admissibility.

When you apply, you must show evidence of college-level skills appropriate to the chosen program in at least one of the following ways:

  • Submit ACT or SAT examination scores deemed appropriate by DeVry. Although requirements may vary by program, the minimum scores DeVry considers when evaluating college-level skills are: ACT Math – 17; ACT English – 17; SAT Math – 500; SAT Reading – 25. Applicants with lower scores in one or both areas may still demonstrate college-level skills in any of the other ways listed. In addition, applicants should note that minimum scores considered for SAT examinations taken prior to March 2016 are: Math – 460; English – 460

  • Attain appropriate scores on DeVry-administered placement examinations in reading, writing, arithmetic and algebra

  • Submit required documentation indicating acceptable grades in qualifying work completed at a recognized institution

Undergraduate Admissions Program Requirements

Technical Management

Applicants to the Technical Management programs must have successfully completed at least 12 semester-credit hours at a recognized post-secondary institution or must hold a DeVry-recognized associate degree or higher3.

Undergraduate Certificate Applicants

Special Admission Requirements for Medical Billing & Coding, Website Design and Website Development Program Applicants

Applicants to these programs must complete DeVry’s English placement exam; those who place into transitional studies coursework in English must take ENGL062 in their first session as part of their program requirements. Required transitional studies coursework may affect program length and cost. These applicants are not required to complete the University’s math placement exam. In addition, such applicants without prior education experience and who test into foundations coursework are not admitted but are offered enrollment in ENGL017.

Online Coursework

To be eligible for study in online coursework, applicants must:

  • Meet all general college admission requirements, including the college-level skills evaluation

  • Own or have off-site access to a PC or laptop computer that meets location- or program-based requirements, including Internet access

  • Check hardware/software requirements before registering for courses

  • Computer requirements for students enrolled in online courses are specified

Specific Applicant College Admissions Requirements

International Applicants

International applicants should obtain academic advising prior to enrolling to ensure you can retain nonimmigrant status while enrolled at DeVry.

Most DeVry locations are authorized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to accept and enroll F-1 Visa students, and require international applicants to submit certain financial and academic documentation before you will be considered for admission. To be considered for admission to DeVry, and before an I-20 can be issued, you must:

  • Provide certified copies of acceptable documents demonstrating the required level of prior education

  • Provide a notarized statement of financial support or a certified government sponsor letter indicating that tuition will be paid in advance of each semester and that a sponsor will provide all necessary living expenses for the international applicant (Form I-134 may be used)

  • Meet requirements for admission of nonnative speakers of English, if applicable (see below)

  • Meet all other DeVry admission requirements. International applicants residing outside the United States who must be accepted prior to entering the country must submit ACT/SAT scores, transcripts of prior college coursework or acceptable documentation of prior mathematics and overall educational performance deemed appropriate for placement into the intended program. DeVry-administered online math and verbal placement tests are available to international applicants who must test before entering the United States.

  • Applicants should check with their consulate or embassy for other pertinent requirements.

We are also authorized to accept and enroll international applicants who wish to transfer to DeVry from other U.S. institutions. In addition to providing the items listed above, transfer applicants must notify the current institution of their intent to transfer. We will communicate with the current institution and process the necessary immigration forms to complete the transfer.

English-Language Proficiency College Admission Requirements

All instruction and services are provided in English.

In addition to fulfilling all other college admission requirements, if your native language is not English, you must demonstrate English-language proficiency. The English-language proficiency requirement is waived for applicants who meet one of the following criteria:

  • English is identified as the official/native language of the country in which the applicants completed all of their secondary education, or postsecondary, advanced or professional degree, as designated in the CIA's World Factbook.

  • Applicants completed their secondary or postsecondary education in a country in which English is not the official/native language; however, English was the principal language of instruction at the institution4.

Applicants whose native language is other than English may also demonstrate English-language proficiency by providing evidence of one of the following:

  • Submission of a U.S. high school diploma or GED® certificate (completed in English)

  • Submission of a high school diploma, or post-secondary degree or higher, earned at an institution in which the language of instruction was English.4

  • Submission of a post-secondary transcript verifying completion of 12 semester-credit hours of baccalaureate-level (excluding remedial or developmental) courses with at least a C (70%) average from an institution in which the language of instruction was English.4

  • Submission of an earned Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 500 on the paper-based TOEFL, 190 on the computer-based TOEFL or 61 on the Internet-based TOEFL

  • Submission of an overall band score of at least 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam

  • Submission of an overall score of at least 4.0 on the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) Academic-Plus exam

  • Submission of an overall score of at least 58 on the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic

  • Successful completion of an approved external Intensive English Program

  • Submission of documents demonstrating successful completion of a DeVry-recognized intermediate-level English as a Second Language (ESL) course

  • Completion of either of the following, with a grade of B (80 percent) or higher, from a DeVry-recognized post-secondary institution or community college:

  • The equivalent of DeVry's freshman English composition course, or

  • Two or more baccalaureate-level English writing or composition courses

  • Documents verifying at least two years' service in the U.S. military

  • Having attained acceptable scores on a DeVry-administered English-language-proficiency exam5.

Home-Schooled or from Not-Recognized High Schools

If you were home-schooled or attended a high school not recognized by DeVry, you must provide one of the following:

  • A transcript indicating you’ve met minimum high school core subject requirements as defined by the state governing board or province. Documentation should include course titles, duration of study (including dates of completion), grades or assessment of performance and credits earned. Information should be delineated by grade years 9, 10, 11 and 12.

  • Documentation outlining courses you’ve completed, year by year, and all end-of-year evaluations of courses by a home-school evaluator or staff person assigned to the student by the local school board or state-approved home school organization. The minimum number of units required in each core subject is: English, three; mathematics, two; natural sciences, one; social sciences, one. Such information must be documented on the transcript.

General Business Option Applicant

Plan II Applicants

In addition to meeting all regular admission requirements, applicants selecting this option must have earned a business-related credential approved by DeVry for articulation. Among others, the following credentials are considered:

  • A three-year bachelor of commerce or bachelor of business administration degree in India. The credential, as well as the granting institution, must be recognized by the appropriate agency in India, and the applicants' overall average marks in the program must have been at an acceptable level, as defined by DeVry.

  • A higher national diploma meeting the requirements of the Scottish Qualifications Authority or other approved authority. The credential, as well as the granting institution, must be recognized by the appropriate national agency.

Applicants Not Seeking Degrees

Just want to brush up on your skills? If you wish to enroll in courses for personal or professional enrichment, but do not intend to pursue a program of study, you must complete a non-matriculated student enrollment agreement. Some general admission requirements and procedures may be waived, especially for high school students participating in an approved enrollment plan. You must demonstrate that you possess the requisite skills and competencies for the intended coursework; an academic administrator will evaluate your status by appropriate means.

Enrollment with non-matriculated status is limited to course attempts totaling 24 semester-credit hours, and further restrictions may be imposed if you’re not making adequate progress.

Non-matriculated students are not eligible for career services, housing assistance, part-time-employment assistance, financial aid or benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Portfolio Assessment (PFA)

You may already know how to do many of the things taught in our required classes before you start your undergraduate admissions and enrollment process. We think that knowledge should count toward your degree.

Our Portfolio Assessment (PFA) allows current students to earn credit for learning done outside of a traditional classroom. The PFA process at DeVry provides you with the opportunity to cut some costs and lessen your course workload. By working with your Student Support Advisor (SSA), you will create a portfolio for credit evaluation showcasing that you have mastered the competencies of one or more specific DeVry courses. Your SSA will help you apply, determine your eligibility and, if eligible, enroll in the PFA course at DeVry. During this course, you’ll have the opportunity to create a portfolio highlighting your experience.

When are the deadlines for Undergraduate Admissions applications?

Many colleges operate in a semester-based format and have undergraduate admissions application deadlines just a couple of times per year. However, at DeVry University, we understand that doesn’t always work for our students. With classes starting every 8 weeks, you can submit your application at any time throughout the year. Has COVID-19 changed the undergraduate admissions requirements?

No. Despite COVID-19, our undergraduate admissions requirements at DeVry University have remained the same.

If your ability to take your SAT or ACT exams was impacted by COVID-19, you can also demonstrate college-level skills by achieving appropriate scores on DeVry-administered placement exams or by submitting documentation of acceptable grades in qualifying work completed at a recognized institution.
