Is finance a good degree choice and career path?

According to occupational outlook data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), overall employment in business and financial occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032. About 911,400 openings are projected each year, on average, in these occupations due to employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupations permanently.

More specifically, the BLS projects employment of financial analysts to grow 8% from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 27,400 openings projected each year, on average, over the decade.3  This growth is projected on a national level and local growth will vary by location. This projection is not specific to DeVry University graduates and may include earners at all stages of their careers.

Should I earn an accounting degree or a finance degree?

Your choice will depend on your personal and professional goals. There certainly are areas where the scope and methods of these interrelated fields overlap, but the difference can be summed up this way: Accounting focuses on the details of financial transactions, while finance concentrates on a “big picture” view of the financial considerations of businesses, individuals, families or government entities. This may encompass roles and responsibilities in wealth management, risk management or investment management.

Can a finance degree help prepare me for professional licensure and certifications?

Yes. Whether you plan to pursue career opportunities in banking, insurance, financial planning or analysis, coursework in our Finance Specialization can help prepare you with the knowledge required to pursue professional certifications such as the Certified Financial Planner(CFP). The CFP is awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to formally recognize knowledge in the areas of financial planning, taxes, insurance, estate planning and retirement savings.

Where do financial professionals work?

Professionals with finance degrees work in a variety of settings, and some may be self-employed as personal financial consultants. According to the BLS, financial and investment analysts held about 317,200 jobs in 20222, working mostly in roles related to securities, commodities contracts and other financial investments and related activities. They may work for financial institutions or insurance carriers, or specialize in risk analysis or portfolio management. They may also work in professional, scientific and technical services, company management or in credit intermediation and related activities.
